The old saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” may seem redundant in the age of social media. However, visualization can be a powerful tool to help you create vivid, realistic characters. This is one of the ways that AI can be a helpful tool for writers.

Use your favorite search engine to find a free AI image generator. Lately, I’ve been using Dream.ai by Wombo. It offers dozens of styles for free with ads, and even more with a subscription (not sponsored).

The tricky part of AI image generation is writing the prompt. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Use it for brainstorming
AI is still being developed and results will vary. I like to use it to help develop my characters while writing my early drafts. It helps to spark my imagination.

Be specific
Use specific details like age, hair color/texture, and gender appearance.

Be concise
Try to boil your description down to a few sentences or phrases. It’s a misconception that an AI prompt needs to be a long paragraph.

Describe a simple action
Something I don’t hear a lot of AI artists talk about is the use of movement to create a dynamic image. Including a simple action in your prompt like “running” or “laughing” can help show your character’s personality

Have fun
AI is a tool, and the more you use it the better you will become at getting the results you want. Try to keep an open mind about the results. It may take a few tries to get an image you are happy with.
