The song was written by vocalist and bassist Sting. It was released as a single on April 7, 1978, ahead of their debut album Outlandos d'Amour. The song's title comes from the name of a character in the play Cyrano de Bergerac. The band was initially skeptical of its success, but producer Miles Copeland was enthusiastic, leading to a contract with A&M Records.
The song tells the story of a man who falls in love with a prostitute, urging her to leave her life on the streets.
A re-release on April 12, 1979, brought the song to number 12 in the UK Singles Chart.
It was ranked 388th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
VH1 ranked it 85th on its list of the 100 Greatest Rock Songs of All Time.
The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.
