The interior design business is experiencing significant growth in Bangladesh, creating opportunities for newcomers who should equip themselves with a solid academic background and a creative mindset.
Principal architect Mamun Ar Rashid of ARCHVISTA emphasised the need for professional architects and interior designers to approach projects from the client’s perspective, ensuring cost-effectiveness while upholding standards.
In an exclusive interview with New Age Business magazine, Rashid shared insights into the current state and expansion of the interior design sector in Bangladesh, exploring possibilities for young designers and architects and discussing the evolution and future of the industry.
Rashid pointed out the changing landscape of taste development in Bangladesh, citing examples such as the evolution of five-star hotels from a single highly decorated office to the current trend of constructing flawlessly finished hotels on smaller plots of land.
He highlighted the serious growth of the interior design business, noting the significant increase in rates from Tk 800-1,000 per square foot in 2005 to the current range of Tk 2,500 per square foot.
The architect emphasised the need and sustainability basis of the interior design business, noting the shift in client preferences towards green building concepts and specific requirements like increased fresh air circulation.
Dismissing misconceptions about interior design being a luxury, Rashid stressed that it is a necessity and a market that is genuinely expanding.
For newcomers seeking to build a career in the sector, Rashid stated that a one-person company is no longer viable, emphasising the need for a complete team, including architects, engineers, consultants, and other professionals.
He highlighted the importance of academic background, stating that it facilitates understanding the grammar of interior designing.
Rashid acknowledged that creative individuals can implement their visions but emphasised the value of delivering quality work.
