Description:
The Bold Plan to Create a Supercontinent: Atlantropa
Did you know there was once a proposal to transform the Mediterranean Sea and create a supercontinent called Atlantropa? This ambitious plan involved constructing three massive dams. The first would span the Strait of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco, halting the inflow from the Atlantic Ocean. The second would block the Dardanelles Strait, disconnecting the Aegean Sea from the Marmara Sea. The third would stretch between Sicily and Tunisia.
If executed, this monumental engineering feat would drop sea levels by 100 meters in the west and 200 meters in the east, resulting in 576,000 square kilometers of new land. Despite its grand vision, the project never advanced beyond the idea stage due to the immense challenges of building such lengthy dams in deep waters. Moreover, the plan posed significant risks, such as stranding coastal cities and major ports, and the new land being highly vulnerable to the destruction of any of the dams by a single nuclear attack.
Join us as we delve into the fascinating concept of Atlantropa, exploring the potential benefits and the colossal hurdles. What do you think? Would you have liked to see this project become a reality? 🌍🏞️

Transcript:
There was a proposal to dam the entire Mediterranean Sea and create a supercontinent called Atlantropa. This would mean that three dams would have to be built. The first one would be in the Strait of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco, stopping the water coming from the Atlantic Ocean. The second one would be in the Dardanelles Strait to disconnect the Aegean Sea from the Marmara Sea, and the third one would be between Sicily and Tunisia.
All this would result in the dropping of sea levels by 100 meters on the western side and 200 meters on the eastern side, creating 576,000 square kilometers of new land. Of course, this plan remained only at the idea stage, as these dams would be almost impossible to build due to their length and the depth of the water. Another downside of this project is that some coastal cities and important ports would be stranded and the new land would be vulnerable to the destruction of any one of the dams by a single nuclear attack.
So, would you like to see this project done?
