I'm sure you guess it, the reason is it's geography,
But we'll talk more about all of this in this video, so make sure you do not miss it.
Feel free to write your opinion about this in the commnets.
Hope you'll enjoy the video!

Transcript:
80% of Americans call the eastern side of this line home.
And if we draw another line along the west coast this splits the demographics even more with 11% of population living on the coast and only 9% of all Americans living in this area here equivalent with around half of mainland U.S.. But Why?
The main reason for this is the geography. You see, The Great rocky mountains act like a colossal wall that blocks the precipitations coming from the pacific ocean, and this map of the annual precipitations on the United States territory speaks for itself.
If we zoom in, we see that this line goes through cities like San Antonio, Fort Worth, Oklahoma, Wichita, Omaha, and Fargo were precipitations are way more significant comparing to cities not far away west.
Also, the cascade mountains, the transverse range and of course, The Sierra Nevadas, Creates a clear division between the wet and rainy coastal plain to their west were big cities like Portland, Seattle and San Francisco were established and the arid environments to their east.
