Did you know thousands of flights AVOID the world's largest ocean every day? If you look at flight radar24 you can see a huge empty space over the Pacific Ocean. But why do planes avoid it? It's NOT because of sea monsters or conspiracy theories. The real reason is ETOPS regulations.

Most planes can only fly 60 minutes away from emergency landing spots. The Pacific covers 63 million square miles - that's too far from emergency landing spots if something goes wrong. And the Pacific has violent storms, typhoons, and volcanic activity that can damage aircraft. Fuel efficiency matters too, flying the shortest route (called "great circle") often means going AROUND the Pacific, not over it. Modern planes need special certification to cross these vast stretches of water.
