Emotional maturity is knowing that when your mood is low, you should not believe everything you think. When you’re feeling down, your brain can play some serious tricks on you—cognitive distortions, to be exact. During these times, your amygdala (the part of your brain that handles emotions) goes into overdrive, making everything feel way more intense and negative than it actually is.
Meanwhile, your rational side (the prefrontal cortex) isn’t as good at calming things down, which can make you see yourself and your situation in a much harsher light than you deserve.
