Born July 27, 1964, legendary bassist Rex Brown turns 61 today—a cornerstone of metal history. As the low-end engine of Pantera, Rex delivered seismic basslines on all of the band’s classic albums, helping shape the sound of modern groove metal with unmatched power and precision.
His work across Pantera’s discography includes:
• Cowboys from Hell (1990)
• Vulgar Display of Power (1992)
• Far Beyond Driven (1994)
• The Great Southern Trendkill (1996)
• Reinventing the Steel (2000)
After Pantera, Rex joined Down, appearing on their brutal sludge-metal masterpiece Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow (2002), alongside Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, and Jimmy Bower. Later, he co-founded Kill Devil Hill, releasing:
• Kill Devil Hill (2012)
• Revolution Rise (2013)
In 2017, Rex went solo with Smoke on This…, stepping into the spotlight as a frontman—handling vocals, bass, and guitar in a bold creative turn. His memoir, Official Truth: 101 Proof, gives fans an unfiltered look at Pantera’s rise, turmoil, and legacy.
Whether tearing up arenas or baring his soul in print, Rex remains one of heavy music’s most iconic and respected figures.
Happy 61st to the groove god who made bass a weapon of mass destruction.
