Hertha and Klaus Franko, siblings and co-fronts of the German darkwave band FRANKO, created their debut album amidst the tension of Cold War Germany. Raised near East Berlin, they grew up smuggling in sounds of Western music, which sparked their passion for synthesizer-driven darkwave fused with the rebel spirit of surfer rock. In 1984, under the guise of a family visit, they crossed the border to Vienna, a neutral ground where East and West creatives converged. There, in the Tonstudio Schönbrunn, they poured their inspiration into an album of haunting tracks that capture both the yearning for freedom and the melancholic beauty of life on the edge of oppression.
