Virrentakoja is a ritual folk artist hailing from Eastern Finland. Based around the tradition and folklore of the artist's home region, North-Karelia, the texts used for the song lyrics are actual spells gathered from this region during the 15th through 18th centuries. Virrentakoja strives to bring life to this nearly forgotten tradition through the use of Finnish folk instruments such as the kantele and the jouhikko, combined with ritualistic percussion and shamanic vocals. The eponymous debut EP contains spells for gaining the might of the thunder god, raising the spirits of the dead, as well as banishing nightmares.
