When white nurses were embracing their newfound liberties in the Roaring '20's, that included new jobs that previously were not open to women, leading to a mass exodus from the well-known tuberculosis (TB) ward, Sea View Hospital in Staten Island, New York. A TB pandemic had gripped the nation, killing roughly one in every 50 Americans. To fill the gap from this labor shortage, New York city officials reached out to Black nurses of the South with an offer to escape Jim Crow for better pay. But when the nurses arrived, they were in for terrible conditions that they did not bargain for.

Author Maria Smilios talks about her new book, "The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis," with host Dr. Mark Anthony Neal in this Small Talk at FHI event!
