Even though Chukotka is far away and has a small population, it got attention when Putin
visited. His visit pointed out an increase in big families there.
Russia is facing a big problem with its population. Since the Soviet Union fell apart, fewer
babies are being born each year. This is very different from when Russia had lots of people.
Many workers in Russia are getting older, and there aren't enough young people to take their
place. This shortage of young workers is hurting the economy.
A lot of Russian men are dying early because of drinking too much vodka. This is making
people in Russia live shorter lives and hurting the health of society.
Even though Russia has tried things like the Maternity Capital program to help families have
more children, their plans for dealing with the population problem have often not worked well.
Instead of making things better, they have sometimes made the population decline worse.
