The Hoover Dam, located on the border of Nevada and Arizona, was built between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression. This massive concrete arch-gravity dam regulates the Colorado River’s flooding, irrigates over 1.5 million acres of land, and supplies water to more than 16 million people. Due to its immense size, the concrete curing process was expected to take nearly a century. To manage the heat and avoid cracking, engineers developed an innovative system that circulated cold water through pipes embedded in the concrete during construction. This reduced the curing time from 100 years to just a few!
