Our chimney was collapsing, the ceiling beams were fractured, the house's frame was riddled with woodworm and we had unbelievable damp problems.When we bought the house the ceiling was hanging down around our ears and the smell was akin to compost and rotting wood. You didn't have to be a trained builder to know something was seriously wrong.
Upon removal of the plaster and ceiling boards, it soon became obvious rot had been there for decades and countless bad repairs had only contributed to the hoard of problems.
Cement had sealed moisture into walls, wooden beams had been set straight down onto damp clay and the double glazing had been badly fitted.
Standing back looking at the work ahead, knowing we have only a few weeks before the cold sets in was daunting. We had never tackled something on this scale, in such a short time-frame.
There were fresh electrics to route underground through the cave network. The chimney needed taking down and re-building. Walls re-pointing. Hardwood beams, cleaned, sanded or replaced. Doors stripped and oiled. A doorway widened. The list went on.....
Realistically, we didn't have the tools, skills, or time. Luckily, none of the materials were probably going to cost a fortune.
We'd given ourselves 4 weeks to tackle this lounge renovation, five weeks in things looked barely changed. Essentially all we'd done was cleared the path for the serious work to begin.
