Advancements in technologies to perform high-throughput fast characterization of microbial communities, their metabolic activity and the response of host cells, have resulted in the generation of a huge amounts of data that can be used to better understand the complex interaction between the intestinal microbiota and the host, and the role of feed and dietary ingredients and additives on health and performance. These insights, generated by the so-called -omics technologies, will yield a strong increase in targeted development of feed additives, gut health biomarkers, and understanding effects of diet on animal performance and health.
