The first President of Ghana once said something striking “If we are to remain free, if we are to enjoy the full benefits of Africa’s rich resources, we must unite”. But despite his efforts and for his efforts, he was removed from power by the US and his dream of a United Africa ended. More than sixty years later and nothing has changed. African leaders are still speaking and dreaming about a United Africa with no tangible actions. However, the new President of Ghana, John Dramani and the President of Burkina Faso, are pushing for an Africa that is without borders and self-reliant. But what exactly does an Africa without borders and is self-reliant mean? And, is it even possible? Let’s find out.
The Berlin Conference of 1884 to 1885 was the cause of most of Africa’s borders today. The Conference was put together by German Chancellor Bismarck for two reasons. One, to settle how European countries would claim colonial land in Africa. And, two, to avoid a war among European nations over African territory. At the time, all the major European States were invited to the conference. Representatives of thirteen European states including Germany, France, Great Britain, Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal were present at the conference. Although the United States was invited because of its interest in Liberia, it did not attend because it had no desire to build a colonial empire in Africa.
