We all know that scene from the pirate movie, where the Captain raises his spyglass to inspect an approaching ship. The first thing he sees are its colors: the big, fat flag, waving from the stern of the ship or the top of the mast. To the modern audience, flags seem like the best way to identify another ship.

Things weren't so easy.
