What is a diode & How diodes work? Diodes are semiconducter elements and are part of almost every electronic circuit.Diodes basics have numerous applications across the electronic industry. It is what we call a PN junction diode, the simplest form of a semiconductor device. Diodes can be a PN junction diode, a zener diode, a schottky diode or even an LED. The more popular material used for diodes is silicon though germanium is also a material that can be used.
The main characteristic of a diode is that allows the current flow in one direction only, so they act as valve and are used to convert AC into DC.
PN Junction is formed when P-type and N-type semiconducters are put together phisicaly.
When PN junction is connected to voltage source (battery) there are two different situations, N-type is connected to postitive and negative pole of the battery.
