Which countries lost the most territory from their peak year until present ?
The Mongol Empire had a land area of around 23 million square kilometers at it’s peak, but today Mongolia territory has shrunk to just 1.56 million square kilometers meaning that it lost around 93.2% of it’s territory.
The British Empire reached the peak of territorial expansion at the beginning of the 20th century having a total land area of 35.5 million square kilometers. Today, UK’s retain only 243 thousand square kilometer which means that it lost around 99.3% of it’s land.
The country which lost the most territory though is Vatican City. With 44 thousand square kilometers in the 16th century, The Papal State used to stretch from Parma and Bologna all the way to Campagna, South of Rome, but today it is just a little fraction of that. With 0.44 square kilometers, Vatican City lost 99.9999% of it’s territory becoming the smallest country in the world.
