Trade in 8th century China flourished under the Tang Dynasty, one of the most prosperous and cosmopolitan periods in Chinese history. The Silk Road was booming — connecting China with Central Asia, the Middle East, and even parts of Europe, allowing silk, ceramics, paper, and tea to flow westward, while horses, spices, and jewels came east. Maritime trade also picked up, with bustling ports like Guangzhou welcoming merchants from Arabia, Persia, and India. Internally, China’s canal systems supported domestic trade and grain transport. The Tang capital, Chang’an, became a melting pot of cultures and a major hub of international commerce. Trade wasn’t just economic — it was cultural.
