On 5 July 1994, Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to ITN's Jon Snow live on air about his opposition to peace talks between the Israeli Labor government led by Yitzak Rabin and the Palestine Liberation Organisation led by Yasser Arafat. The leader of Israel's primary opposition party Likud, Netanyahu faced questions about his reasons for opposing the talks. Jon Snow also questioned the country's future prime minister on his having appeared in front of a banner reading "Death to Arafat" at a Likud rally, and Yitzak Rabin's statement which likened Netanyahu's uncompromising stance to that of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic resistance organisation which also opposed the peace talks.
