Description:
The Mysterious Case of Sandy Island: An Island That Never Was
Join us as we explore the fascinating story of Sandy Island, a phantom island part of the French overseas territories of New Caledonia. Located 1040 kilometers off the northeast coast of Australia in the Coral Sea, Sandy Island was first discovered in 1774 by Captain James Cook. He charted it as a 24-kilometer-long island off the tip of New Caledonia.
However, in the 1970s, French explorers flying over the area discovered that Sandy Island didn't actually exist, leading to its removal from official French maps. Despite this, the "undiscovery" of Sandy Island did not reach the United States, and it continued to appear on maps, including Google Maps and satellite images.
The confusion arose because satellite maps are not purely satellite images. They are created using bathymetric data. In the place where Sandy Island was supposed to be, there was an island-shaped black void, indicating the expected ground satellite imagery was missing.
It wasn't until 2012 that the island was finally deleted from all maps when an Australian team confirmed that Sandy Island did not exist in reality.
Discover the full story behind this mysterious non-existent island and how it managed to deceive cartographers for centuries! 🌍🗺️

This island was recently undiscovered.
This is Sandy Island, an uninhabited island part of the French overseas territories of New Caledonia. It is 1040 kilometers away from the northeast coast of Australia in the Coral Sea. The island was discovered in 1774 by Captain James Cook, who charted a 24-kilometer-long island off the tip of New Caledonia.
In the 1970s, the French explored the area from a plane and noticed that Sandy Island didn't exist, so the island was removed from all official French maps. However, the word of Sandy Island's "undiscovery" did not reach the United States, which continued to show Sandy Island on maps. In fact, even Google Maps showed it on its maps and satellite images.
This is because satellite maps are not 100% satellite images. The map texture is created by using bathymetric data, so in the place where Sandy Island was supposed to be, they expected to have ground satellite imagery, but didn’t, since the island didn’t exist, so they showed this island-shaped black void.
The island was finally deleted from all maps in 2012 when an Australian team noticed the island did not exist in reality.
