President Donald Trump said the United States will leave the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday, saying the global health agency had mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises.

Trump said the WHO had failed to act independently from the “inappropriate political influence of WHO member states” and required “unfairly onerous payments” from the U.S. that were disproportionate to the sums provided by other, larger countries, such as China.

On Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said it "regrets" the announcement and hoped the decision would be reconsidered.
Meanwhile, other member nations reiterated their support.

"China will, as always, support the World Health Organization in fulfilling its duties, deepening international public health cooperation, strengthening global health governance, and promoting the building of a human health community," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun said.
