Thousands of people of all ages, races and religions dressed in colourful traditional costumes poured into the streets in the capital and elsewhere across Bangladesh at the crack of dawn on Thursday welcoming the Bangla New Year.
In the capital, a huge crowd gathered on Dhaka University campus and its adjoining areas where a heavy security blanket was thrown with hundreds of police who patrolled the areas with guns and sniffer dogs to ward off any untoward incident.
The festivity began with the traditional programme of Chhayanaut at Ramna Park where the artistes ushered in the Bangla year 1429.
The faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University brought out their iconic colourful procession, Mangal Shobhajatra, a UNESCO-recognised intangible cultural heritage, at 9:00am from the Teacher-Student Centre of the campus. People in the procession sang and danced welcoming the new year.
