Originally our French Chic Bathroom was going to be a light lime-washed blue.
However, after an initial test we've had a re-think and it's ended up Canard Blue.

Bleu Canard is an intense colour that reflects the blue, green hues of a ducks wings.

It's given our bathroom a very sophisticated upmarket feel.

Considering the bath was £10, the sink was 99p and the toilet was heading for a skip, that's quite an achievement.

We'd bought our first paint choice in England. However, the second choice was French paint and was at least 3 times the price.

The consistency was however, much thicker and covered and multitude of sins.

We'd bought an all in one multi-jet shower cubicle in the 'Black Friday' sales.

In France, particularly rural areas, there isn't a great choice of shower cubicles. The 'Goodhome Onega' looked our best option.

For build and design quality we'd give it a generous 1 out of 5.
This showers appeared to be put together from oddments not originally designed to fit together.

The instructions were atrocious, so even Mandy frustratingly dismissed them.
Firstly, to assemble the shower you needed to have the shower tray pulled out 1 meter from the wall.
You needed tiny fingers, yet the muscles of a body builder to lift multiple glass panels simultaneously.
Once complete, you needed to lift the completed unit into place; with a magic crane; then suspend yourself upside down to tighten the now cramped & hidden plumbing fittings.

There are numerous joints and gaps that have no water seal. The base tray has ripples, leaving several gaps for water to exit.

With only two very flimsy brackets to mount the whole assembly to the wall, when you close the door everything wobbles uncontrollably.

After all our disappointments with the shower, we are still very pleased with the progress in our Bathroom.

We hope you can see from the before and after photos exactly how far we have come. What we didn't want was a nasty off the shelf, plastic bathroom. The shower, spoils the concept slightly and given it's many weaknesses may need to upgraded. Our goal was 'elegant french country bathroom' and we believe we done that.

When we viewed the house their was a tiny bathroom with no toilet and an abnormally short bath unfit for humans. Mold was growing on most surfaces and bare electrical wires hung just above the sink. Most potential buyers would have been put off not just by the smell but by the tiny dimensions. Although a bathroom doesn't need to be huge, it does need to meet every basic criteria. It needs to be clean bright and fully equipped.

As always in rural France, you must keep a tight eye on renovation budgets. You can't simply add value to a property by throwing cash at it. The material costs in France are very high compared with the UK. Therefore, the only option was to do all the work by ourselves. The key word for every item is 'budget' or 'second-hand'.

What we have proved with our bathroom is that a huge budget is not necessary. Our French Shabby Chic Bathroom should come in at under €750. We have ripped up floors, knocked down walls, re-wired, re-plumbed, re-plastered, put in new ceramics, fitted a shower, painted and fixed the window.

Now the bathroom is a statement piece. Our house will be known as the house with the roll top ceramic slipper bath, or the 'Shabby Chic Bathroom House'. However, we never plan to sell!

On the wall is mounted a print by one of our favorite artists, Lowell Herrero - Hillside Flowers.

There is still work to do, but we're getting there.
