I learned several versions of "East Virginia" from George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky. My banjo is tuned a couple of frets below gDGCD here. "East Virginia" is also nicely played in fFGCD or gFGCD. The song is probably quite early, and details the historic migration of English and Scotch-Irish settlers from coastal Virginia, then south into North Carolina, and finally turning west into the southern Appalachian Mountains.
