Eddie Van Halen almost passed up the opportunity to perform his famous guitar solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It," thinking Quincy Jones' request was a practical joke. This is one of the most famous "almost missed" moments in rock history. In a 2012 CNN interview, Van Halen described how he was shocked to get a call from Jones, a well-known producer who had worked with Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin, among others. Van Halen answered the phone suspiciously, asking, "What do you want, you?" since he wasn't sure it was Jones. Van Halen wasn't sure whether the call was real, but Jones clarified who he was.
