Livestock markets are bustling places where Muslims gather to select the perfect animal for Eid - the most significant holiday celebrated in Islam.
Exploring the market, we were stunned by the number and kinds of animals being traded. There were countless breeds of cows, bulls, sheep, goats, and a lot more.
Engaging with the locals and with the help of our driver, we learned about the deep-rooted traditions and symbolism behind the ritual of sacrificing animals, as well as the reasons why Muslims engage in this act of devotion.
This ritual doesn’t only fulfill a religious obligation but also serves as a means of giving back to the community and sharing the blessings of the occasion with the less fortunate.
We also had the chance to hear about the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) offering to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God and uncover the similarities and differences between the Biblical and Quranic narratives of this remarkable story.
Our visit to Islamabad was short but full of surprises, and the animal market wasn’t an exception. Learning about the age-old traditions, the local culture and clothing, and the way people traded with animals out in the open transported us back in time, like we were in a totally different era. Crazy, right?
