During Vesak celebrations in Sri Lanka, a mechanical processor is used to control the lights. It works using a rotating drum covered with metal plates. As the drum rotates, the plates act as mechanical switches, opening and closing the electrical circuit. They alternately open and close the electrical circuit. The drum's speed of rotation as well as the plates' arrangement determine the lights' rhythm and flashing pattern. No computers or software are involved—just clever mechanical engineering.
