Autumn in Patagonia is a magical time of year and we arrived in mid-April just in time to enjoy all the fall foliage! In this video we'll show you how we spent our first few days in Bariloche. This time around, we opted to stay in the outskirts of the city at Estancia del Carmen which overlooks Lake Gutierrez. It was a beautiful spot and we were surrounded by nature.

Since we were so close to the lake, we opted to do a horse trek around Lake Gutierrez, which was a lot of fun. We got to trek through forests, open plains surrounded by mountains, and along the lake's crystal clear shores.

We also hiked up to Laguna Verde via the Neumeyer Mountain Refuge. That was a breathtaking hike and the red autumn colours really made the green lagoon pop! Autumn is a great time of year to do this hike.

Chose Estancia Del Carmen on the lake’s edge—just 15 min from Bariloche but worlds away in tranquillity.

Picked up brochures at our hotel, then signed up for a mix of horse trekking and hiking with kayaking & sailing as other options for visitors.

Route 40

Scenic drive south along Ruta 40, turning onto gravel to reach the saddle-style lodge. 🐑

Warm Welcome & Lemon Cake

Signed waivers, then warmed up with tea, coffee and lemon cake slices before saddling up. 🍋

Lakeside Stroll

While horses were readied, we wandered the shore, soaking in the blazing scarlets and golds of autumn.

Safety First

Helmets on. This track is beginner-friendly—no slipping on steep trails today! 🪖

Horse Trek Highlights

Through laguna forests into an open andean plain, circled back along the lake’s edge.

Horses sipped the ultra-clear water; we sipped the mountain air. 🐎

Riverside Barbecue Lunch

Post-ride feast at the lodge with fellow guests—perfect asado under the Patagonian sky. 🔥

Woke up to lake reflections & mountain silhouettes—never tired of this panorama!

On-Site Dining

Dined twice on Patagonian beef in creamy mushroom sauce, pear-gorgonzola walnut salad & hearty goulash.

Hearty Breakfast Buffet

Chipa cheese breads, fresh pastries, charcuterie, eggs & bacon on demand—fuel for the day ahead. 🥓

Laguna Verde Morning Hike

Picked up by shuttle to Neumeyer Refuge, stepped into zero °C frost for a 7 km loop.

Spotted giant cow’s-tongue mushrooms, wisps of old-man’s beard lichen & untouched lenga forest. 🍄

Protected Green Lagoon

Frog sanctuary above the emerald water—view from the platform only, but wow, what a sight! 🐸

Mountain-Refuge Lunch

Warm pumpkin soup & cazuela de lentejas (Argentine lentil stew) to thaw us out.

Resident Cat “Roberto”

Met the cosy dome’s mascot, curled by the wood-burner—Patagonian hospitality at its cutest. 🐈

Pub-Style Dinner in Bariloche

After a day of lakes, trails & horses, managed one more outing for pizza & craft beer downtown. 🍕🍺

Estancia Wrap-Up

Third visit to Bariloche, yet staying remote let us rediscover why Patagonia is the adventure capital of Argentina.
