Description:
Many people assume Kaliningrad is Russia's westernmost point, but the reality is a bit more surprising. While Kaliningrad is Russia's furthest outpost in Europe, Russia's true western edge actually lies across the Bering Strait in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. Located within the western hemisphere, Chukotka straddles the hemispheric border, making it both the westernmost and easternmost point of Russia. Join us as we explore how Russia’s unique geography places it in two hemispheres at once!

Transcript:
Many people believe that Kaliningrad is the westernmost territory of Russia, but that's not quite accurate. While Kaliningrad is indeed Russia's westernmost region in Europe and serves as a strategic outpost from which Russia exerts influence over Europe and NATO, it’s not Russia’s true western edge.
The western hemisphere begins at the Prime Meridian in Greenwich and extends 180 degrees westward. Interestingly, if you look closely, there’s a piece of Russian land within this western hemisphere. This area is part of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, located across the Bering Strait from Alaska.
Because the hemispheric border cuts Chukotka in two, this means that Chukotka is both the western and easternmost state in Russia.
