Ruff Sqwad’s ‘White Label Classics’ immediately became a legendary instrumental album upon its release in 2012, compiling some of the greatest tracks from the golden era of Grime.

Despite the disbanding of the group and commercial solo success of Ruff Sqwad’s Tinchy Stryder, the album remains a staple of the genre. It continues to be hugely popularised by its Grime revival homages from the past five years, with the likes of Stormzy, Dave and Chip all adopting its instrumentals.

But why was this release so important for Grime’s heritage on the whole, and how did it help educate a new wave of Grime fans?

Sub_Terrain takes deep dives into pockets of the underground music scene, unearthing the stories and timelines beneath the genres that shape contemporary culture. For Episode 3 of the series, we join music journalist and BIMM Institute alumnus Punit Kavia in his love letter that pays respects to a seminal Grime album.
