Tracking and measurement of commercial energy use is the foundation behind energy savings goals. “You can’t track what you don’t measure.” In this Bonus Scene of the Better Buildings Challenge SWAP (), brought to you by the U.S. Department of Energy, hear from both Hilton Worldwide and Whole Foods Market about why tracking and measurement is so important to their organizations’ energy saving goals.

Commercial buildings and industrial plants account for 50% of our nation’s primary energy use and cost about $400 billion annually to power/operate. The Better Buildings Challenge is aimed at achieving the goal of doubling American energy productivity by 2030 while motivating corporate and public-sector leaders across the country to save energy through commitments and investments. More than 285 organizations are partnering with the Energy Department to achieve 20 percent portfolio-wide energy savings and share successful strategies that maximize efficiency over the next decade. Across the country, partners have shared energy data for more than 32,000 properties and are reporting energy savings of 20 percent or more at 4,500 properties, and 10 percent or more at 12,000 properties.

Measuring energy, water and waste is extremely important to any organization. It’s the foundation behind you setting your goal. If you don’t have a starting point, you cannot create a finish, so at Hilton World Wide, we start with measure, measure, measure and then we set our goals.

Energy audits are a key factor in energy efficiency. You know, one says, “You can’t change what you don’t measure,” and an energy audit is a baseline measurement of where our store is at.

We require every single one of our hotels to set annual targets for energy reduction they have to measure, using our corporate responsibility performance measurement system, called, “Light Stay.” It allows us to aggregate our performance globally. We’ve seen over 550-million dollars saved through energy, water and waste efficiency projects.it has allowed our company to be the first global hotel company to receive ISO 50,001 Certification for Energy Management.

Whether it’s suiting our cases with doors, whether it’s looking at more efficient lighting, controlling and monitoring, really, the measurement and verification that allows us to better manage our facilities is extremely important to us.
