Dawn on a large city square surrounded by imposing brutalist architecture: a horse stands, solitary and still. Accentuated by the sparse and haunting soundtrack, the horse’s body contrasts with the concrete environment. Seemingly alien to each other both horse and architecture speak about public sculpture, monuments to achievements. Melanie Manchot is a London-based visual artist working with photography, film/video as a performative and participatory practice. Her projects respond to specific sites and public spaces or particular communities to explore individual and collective identities.
