And now let’s talk about the star of the show: the Perito Moreno Glacier. This glacier measures 5 km in length along its front and is 60 meters tall, however, if you also count the depth of the ice its height is closer to 170 meters! This glacier right here is the reason why so many people travel all the way down to southern Patagonia. Perito Moreno is also one of the few advancing glaciers in the world, so that alone is reason enough to visit.
Los Glaciares National Park is hands down one of the most impressive places that Sam and I have ever visited, and we couldn’t recommend it more highly! We spent hours walking the boardwalks and viewing the glacier from various vantage points, and it was pure magic!
In this video, we'll show you how you can visit the park independently (no tour necessary), and we'll show you what a day hiking in the park looks like. We hope you enjoy it!

❄️ Ultimate Perito Moreno Glacier Experience: Hiking, Boardwalks & Scenic Views | Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia
🌄 Good Morning from Patagonia: Back for More Glacier Adventures!
We’re back in paradise—Los Glaciares National Park in stunning Patagonia, Argentina! After loving our glacier boat excursion, we just had to return for a full day of hiking and to see the Perito Moreno Glacier from all the best boardwalk vantage points. This time, we organized our own transportation: a return bus ticket from El Calafate ($20 USD total), leaving us free to explore the park at our own pace from 10:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Don’t forget the park entrance fee (about $12 USD for foreigners; less for locals). All set for a magical day? Let’s go!
🍴 Early Lunch With a View
First stop: the only restaurant in the area—strategically located with panoramic glacier views right from your table! We decided to fuel up early, sharing a chicken sandwich, a lamb sandwich, and an indulgent brownie for dessert. We recommend this approach: while everyone rushes to the trails, a leisurely lunch lets the crowds disperse and sets you up for a calm, hunger-free day of hiking.
🚶 Hitting the Boardwalks: Navigating Without a Map
We dove straight into the park’s network of color-coded boardwalks—no map, just following the glacier’s imposing presence! (Pro tip: stop at the info point for a trail map if you want a plan.) The boardwalks wind through forest and open spaces, offering new perspectives at every turn. Don’t be surprised by the number of stairs—bring your energy and be prepared for some cardio! The higher you climb, the more awe-inspiring the glacier looks, stretching all the way to the mountain peaks.
❄️ Perito Moreno Glacier: Nature’s 10/10 Wow Factor
Los Glaciares National Park is the crown jewel of Santa Cruz Province, home to 47 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap. The star is Perito Moreno: 5 kilometers wide at its face, 60 meters tall above the water, and over 170 meters deep below. It’s one of the world’s few advancing glaciers—a must-see for any traveler in Patagonia. We spent hours walking the boardwalks, taking in ever-changing vantage points, and simply soaking up the magic. Around noon is the best time to witness chunks of ice calving off the glacier—don’t miss this dramatic show!
🌲 Forest Trails & Fewer Crowds
Venturing into the forest sections of the park, we enjoyed a break from the wind and a bit more solitude. The crowds naturally thin out as you climb higher, and the views become even more epic. Don’t worry if the main boardwalks feel busy: take your time, pause for a bench picnic, and choose alternate paths to escape any crowds.
👟 Tips for Your Glacier Visit: What to Wear & How to Plan
Bundle up: It’s much colder here than in town, and the wind can be fierce. Bring a jacket, mittens, and layers!
Plan your lunch: You can eat at the restaurant or bring your own picnic—just remember to pack out all trash. The park provides bags for this purpose.
Pace yourself: The boardwalk system is extensive with many stairs. Take breaks at the numerous benches and enjoy the scenery.
