It was a watershed moment in British industrial history and labour relations. After a year of bitter strike action dividing local communities and the nation at large, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) narrowly voted to end the year-long strike and return to work without settlement on the 3rd of March, 1985. It was an extremely contentious decision for communities that had faced hardship and breadlines since 140,000 workers had walked out over Margaret Thatcher’s plans to shut 20 pits were announced in March, 1984.

Between the 3rd and the 5th of March 1985, ITN reported from collieries and pit towns across the country, on the general mood of returning workers alongside those still holding firm to the strike and its goals. This series of reports from ITN showcases the somber conclusion of this historic confrontation.
