Utah-based abstract painter Helen E. Becker creates dynamic collage paintings that act as both a form of self-expression and an exploration of human nature. Her bold yet sensual work will be on view as part of “Summer Idyll,” a collective exhibition at Agora Gallery in New York City, from June 27 to July 17, 2019.

Becker developed an early interest in architecture and the building process, the result of a mechanical engineer father and living surrounded by steel factories. She became fascinated with how things are built and their underlying structures. She is specifically interested in highways, which she describes as conduits for both physical and existential journeys.

Becker’s work often employs utilitarian materials such as rope, paper, twine, and and sawdust—the same materials seen in construction and civil engineering. These materials add texture to her works, which are then covered with acrylic paint. The gritty surfaces deconstruct the physical essence of highway roads while creating visual pathways meant to parallel life’s journey.
