Thailand's Constitutional Court on Tuesday suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from duty pending a case seeking her dismissal, adding to mounting pressure on a government fighting for survival on multiple fronts. Sean Hogan has more.
Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been suspended from duty - adding to mounting pressure on a government that is fighting for its survival on multiple fronts.
The Constitutional Court made the decision on Tuesday, pending a case seeking Paetongtarn's dismissal.
"The decision is out. I respectfully accept the court's decision and from this moment, I will cease performing my duties. I do not know for how long but there will be a 15-day period to provide clarification.”
The court took on the petition from 36 senators accusing the 38-year-old leader of dishonesty and breaching ethical standards in violation of the constitution.
That's after a politically sensitive telephone conversation between Paetongtarn and Cambodia's influential former leader Hun Sen was leaked.
In the call she kowtowed before Hun Sen and criticized a Thai army commander, a red line in a country where the military has significant clout.
The fall out has left Paetongtarn's coalition with a razor-thin majority.
A key party has abandoned the alliance and is expected to seek a no-confidence vote in parliament.
Her government has also been struggling to revive a stuttering economy and her popularity has declined sharply.
Protest groups are demanding the premier resigns.
Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit will take over in a caretaker capacity while the court decides the case.
