When a substance changes its state, heat energy is involved. This energy is used not to heat up the substance, but to separate the molecules from each other. This is known as specific latent heat.

Specific latent heat is defined as the amount of heat required to change 1 kg of a substance from one physical state to another without any change in temperature.
