Effects of Music:
Oliver Wendell Holmes is quoted as saying, "Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons. You will find it is to the soul what a water bath is to the body." His phrase suggests that music has a cleansing quality. That may very well be true. In fact, music can affect the body in many ways. The variety of music is endless. Music can be used for relaxation, motivation and even education.
Music affects many areas of the brain. Dr. Daniel Levitin, author of the book "This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession," suggests that the brain responds in various ways to music, and everyone's brain doesn't respond in the same way. Some music motivates you to move. According to Levetin, that effect comes from the stimulation of the motor cortex of the brain. Other music may relax you because your frontal cortex is stimulated.
There are countless studies exploring the concept of music as a relaxation technique to help pain, sleeplessness and anxiety. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) produced a news release in 1999 advocating music as a way to reduce pain for patients who underwent abdominal surgery. The news release came in response to a study led by by Marion Good, PhD, RN. The study produced significant results in favor of musical therapy to relieve pain. In another study, Suzanne B. Hanser and Larry W. Thompson studied the effects of music on older, depressed adults. This study also supported evidence that music, indeed, lessens stress, and thus has medicinal importance.
Music as therapy is widely supported by medical professionals, and many use it in everyday practice. Debbie Miller, a registered nurse, says it is great to "listen to relaxing music or use other distractions so your brain shifts the focus. Music therapy is an excellent and safe addition to other measures."
