It's an unusual offer, one that he hasn't heard of before.
Farmers' jobs are hard. He had been there since 2 am and it was already 1pm. He hadn't be able to sleep at all. He also worked the entire day yesterday to harvest his vegetables.
If he doesn't sell all his vegetables, they would go to waste. He still has to go back and harvest more. It's oftentimes a business that brings in negatives but he can't afford to stop and he also doesn't have any other employment options.
He works so hard because of his daughter who is in college and needed the money. The tuition is $30k per year and he barely sell anything so far that day.
He also has a son who is married. He has also helped his son secure housing which isn't cheap. All the household expenses falls on him and the kind stranger could see how hard the farmer works which made him even more convinced that he would help the farmer.
