Why are gay people being blamed for the LA wildfires?
At least 11 people have been k1lled and more than 10,000 homes have been destroyed by wildfires across southern California this week.
The fires were caused by a combination of exceptionally dry weather in Los Angeles and powerful offshore gusts known as the Santa Ana winds. Investigation into what initially sparked the fires is ongoing.
However, some people have already started to blame LGBTQ+ people for the devastation caused.
During a broadcast on Fox News affiliated KTTV on Thursday (9 January), reporters spoke to a passer-by who said: “I think it’s all the gay people in LA”.
Other Conservatives have blamed the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Chief Kristin Crowley - the department’s first out gay leader - claiming her focus on diversity initiatives was to blame for firefighters’ inability to put out the fires.
Former Fox news host Megyn Kelly said in a video on Wednesday 8 January: “Who gives a sh*t if the fire chief is gay... can you fight the f**king fires madam?”
The LAFD is not responsible for filling fire hydrants in Los Angeles. That falls to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Billionaire Elon Musk also claimed that DEI initiatives were to blame for the devastation caused by the wildfires, writing on X: “They prioritized DEI over saving lives and homes”.
