Born in 1946 in Ireland, singer-songwriter Raymond Edward O'Sullivan moved to London in 1967 to pursue his music career. To stand out and secure a record deal, he adopted a striking visual style, featuring a bowl cut, a cloth cap, and short trousers—reminiscent of 1930s silent film stars like Keaton and Chaplin. He said his love of silent films influenced his look. The name "Gilbert Sullivan" was borrowed from the famous comic operas by Gilbert and Sullivan.
O'Sullivan sent demo tapes to Gordon Mills, manager of Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck, which led to a contract with Mills' newly established label, MAM Records. Later, he discovered that the contract heavily favored Mills, leading to a long legal battle over his earnings. In 1982, the court ruled in his favor, awarding him £7 million in damages—equivalent to about £31.2 million in 2025.

During his peak, he deliberately avoided dating out of fear it might affect his songwriting. In 1980, he married his Norwegian girlfriend, Aase Brekke, and they have two daughters. He resides on the island of Jersey and he continues to record albums and perform, with particular popularity in Japan.

"Alone Again (Naturally)" is a song written by Gilbert O'Sullivan. This ballad, characterized by his distinctive piano style with punchy bass notes and chords played with the right hand to enhance its emotional depth, explores themes of suicide and loss. However, he has stated that it is not autobiographical.
