Who was Popeye and what was the story behind him? Popeye the Sailor Man, one of the most beloved cartoon characters, was inspired by a real person. Frank "Rocky" Fiegel, born in Poland in 1868, emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Illinois. He spent two decades as a sailor before working as a bouncer in Chester, Illinois. Known for his fights, deformed eye, and pipe-smoking habit, Rocky became the model for Popeye. Elzie Crisler Segar, the creator of Popeye, met Rocky and based the character on his colorful personality and seafaring tales.
