PortaFlow FSU-470.1 (Modified Yamaha PortaSound PSS-470 Keyboard)

This is my second modification of the Yamaha PortaSound PSS-470. I love stumbling across this keyboard because it has the basic guts of the legendary DX7. It is a modder's dream.

I have removed this unit's speakers and channeled their output through a Kenwood 8 band stereo EQ. I have routed the signal to mono and hardwired the output through the two EQ channels in series. That is to say that the keyboard output signal goes into the EQ left channel and then directly to the right channel. This allows for a beastly manipulation of the keyboard's sounds. Even the cheesy drums take on a new life. The kick can sound legit.

For added wonderfulness, I have wired an old Boss DS-1 distortion pedal after the signal leaves the EQ and before outputting to the EQ right output. This little keyboard can scream.

The EQ has been attached to the keyboard. It is light as a feather and very mobile.

I have left the keyboard's aux outs alone. That means you can still have the unadulterated stereo sound. If you run those outputs and the EQ outputs to an outboard mixer, you can add more fx and build a fat fat sound.
