The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources held a hearing on Thursday, August 5, 2021, examining the role of and programs within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

At this hearing, Senator King asked Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory Dr. Thomas Zacharia about his prognosis for fusion energy. Dr. Thomas Zacharia responded positively that commercial fusion could be 5-10 years away, especially with the use of public-private partnerships.
