A lid seemed to cover Carey's (8-1, 6-1) basket in the opening half as they struggled to send the ball through the net with just one field goal in the 1st quarter and tallied a season-low 8 points heading into the halftime break. Mohawk (9-2, 4-2) took advantage of the Devils poor shooting effort to build a 14-point lead with Bryce Hannam notching 8 of his team-best 12 points in the first two quarters.
The Warriors double-digit margin would remain intact heading into the final quarter despite Carter Smiley scoring 12 of Carey's 15 points in the third, but their cushion would quickly start to vanish at the start of the fourth. An 8-0 run by the N10 leading Blue Devils would pull them within striking distance at the 4:30 mark, and they would hang around until the final horn. A monster 3-pointer by sophomore Boomer Cleveland in the closing minute would provide a huge Mohawk boost, as they fended off a game-tying attempt by Brayden Young to hand Carey their 1st loss of the season.
Young would finish the night with just 2 points, while Smiley filled it up for a game-high 16 and Putnam added 10. Both Cleveland and Hannam scored 12 to lead the Warriors who also got 10 from AJ Hess, who received recognition for joining the 1,000-point club before the game.
Next up for Mohawk is a trip to Seneca East (9-3, 4-2) next Wednesday while Carey will next visit the Tigers on Friday.
