This week, we’re diving into one of our biggest mechanical challenges yet: rebuilding the engine of our old Thwaites dumper! Tied to some of the largest projects we’ve taken on here—like the excavation behind the barn and the driveway—the dumper has already proven itself, moving massive amounts of soil and saving us countless hours of work. But after months of hard use (and a few tough conditions), repairs were no longer something we could push off.
Philippe brings the dumper down to Claude’s workshop to give it the full care it deserves: a total engine rebuild!As Philippe dismantles part after part, it’s surprise after surprise—not always the good kind. Let's just say there's a whole lot of mounting, disassembling, bolting, and unbolting going on to get everything just right!
From cleaning old parts to installing new cylinders, bearings, and pistons, and checking every fine measurement—it’s careful, detailed work that shows just how much attention an old machine like this needs to keep running strong.Getting the cylinder heads perfectly aligned, measuring critical spacings with solder wire, and learning along the way with Claude’s expertise—it’s all part of bringing this little beast back to life.
