About Halebeedu:
Halebeedu in Hasan district which is located in the south western part of Karnataka . This is land of rich history, art and architecture and immense natural beauty.
The great architects of Hoysalas built about 1521 temples at about 952 places over 200 years. Around 452 of these spectacular shrines have survived and most of them are located in the beautiful district of Hassan. The magnificent temples at Belur and Halebeedu showcase the distinct Hoysa architecture.
Temples of Belur, Halebeedu and Sravanbelagola, also described as Golden triangle of south India.
The Hoysala dynasty reigned from the 11th to the 14th century.
The name Hoysala is derived from hoy means strike in kannada and Sala is the name of the legendry head of the Hoysala dynasty. Sala single handily fought a tiger to save his Guru.
The small town of Halebeedu, literally meaning an "old encampment" in kannada was glorious capital of Hoysala's during 11th century. It was then known as Dorasamudra or the "Ocean of Dora" in Sanskrit. Later called as Davrasamudra "gate of ocean" in 19th century.
The Hoysalas built 150 temple in south Karnataka, but the temples of Halebeedu, Belur and Somnathpur are considered to be best. Hoysaleswara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Construction was started in 1121 by kettumala setti, one of the officials of king Vishnuvardhana and could complete only by 1207. Southern doorway of the temple was build during his son Narsimha. The construction work continued for around one century. The temple complex is built with soapstone has four porches for entry and the lateral entrance toward northern side is now used as the main entrance.
There are 2 identical temples along with Nandi mandapas. Northern side is named Shantaleshwara, after Shantala Devi the beloved queen of Vishnuvardhana. While the southern side temple is Hoysaleswara temple. The two temples halls are joined by a common verandah.
Thousands of beautiful carved sculptures depicting scenes from the mythological epics, Ramayan, Mahabharata etc..
