A 'slipped' (prolapsed) disc often causes sudden, severe lower back pain. The disc often presses on a nerve root which can cause pain and other symptoms in a leg.
A slipped disc occurs when the outer ring becomes weak or torn and allows the inner portion to slip out. This can happen with age. Certain motions may also cause a slipped disc. A disc can slip out of place while you are twisting or turning to lift an object.

Understanding the back
The spine is made up of many bones called vertebrae.
These are roughly circular and between each vertebra is a disc.
Disc: A rubber like material, have two parts
Inner part
Outer part

Prolapsed/ Slipped disc
In slipped or prolapsed disc-a disc actually does not slip.
Due to the weakness in the outer part.
A part of inner soft tissue of disc bulges out.
Any disc in the spine can prolapse.
Most prolapsed discs occur in the lower back.

Who gets prolapsed/ slipped disc ?
Most common age is 30 to 50.
Men are twice more prone than women.

Risk factors
Being overweight ( obesity )
Sedentary lifestyle
Smoking
Weight-bearing ( weightlifting , etc)

Symptoms
Back pain: reduces by lying down, Increase when you move your back,
Nerve root pain: Nerve coming from the spinal cord is pressed by slipped disc.Pain is felt through path of nerve along with back.Most affected nerve which comes out from spinal cord and goes into both legs.

Progress of prolapsed disc.
In most cases symptoms improve in few weeks.
In 10% of cases the pain is still bad after 6 weeks.
